Time to see the writing on the wall.
Commemorate #WorldLetterWritingDay with conceptual artist Jenny Holzer’s Inflammatory Essays.
Originally presented anonymously on the streets of New York City in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Holzer’s short texts critique power and control, sex and abuse—themes that continue to inform Holzer’s work today. “DESTROY SUPERABUNDANCE”; “FORGET TRUTHS, DISSECT MYTHS”; and “CHANGE IS THE BASIS OF ALL HISTORY, THE PROOF OF VIGOR” are just a few of the forceful messages contained in this body of work. Variously insightful, aggressive, or comic, these manifestos express multiple viewpoints that the artist hopes will provoke public discourse.
