On view now at 509 W 24th Street: Selected works by Jennifer Bartlett. Spanning the length of Bartlett's career, this presentation highlights her early formal examinations of painting in steel plate works, which here are in dialogue with Bartlett's explorations into more expressive, richly layered oil paintings. Where the plate works are grounded in a rigid mathematical system, the oil paintings expand beyond this self-imposed constraint into looser, more abstracted compositions. This focused presentation emphasizes Bartlett's particular place in 20th century art history, characterized by a nimble dissection of the intersections of minimalism and expressionism, realism and abstraction, which, at the same time, elides singular categorization.
