Aaand... the grand finish which I suspect was Mistie’s favorite part: hopping on the back of my Vespa for a little ride at the end of our last night. My son Oliver said this best. As we were hugging goodbye on our last night, Oliver said: we are friends not because of the cancer. That’s why we met. But we are now friends despite the cancer. That made Mistie cry. I had taken it for granted that Mistie and Todd knew- but it took Oliver to put it into words to crack it open. A few people had in fact pointed out to Mistie that it took for her to get cancer to become friends with me. And in a way, that’s true. Because it was her indomitable spirit in the face of the worst happening to her that caught my attention. But she’s now my friend because she’s the most positive, optimistic, loving, funny and grateful soul I’ve ever met. She’s in every way my inspiration. As is Todd, the man not only standing by when the shit hit the fan, but actively changed and is changing to best navigate the constantly shifting waters of being married to someone with an incurable illness. A man who doesn’t abandon ship when it’s in trouble, but rolls up his sleeves and goes to work. No one is more life and love affirming than Todd and Mistie. Not because of the cancer.
