Here at the Trust, rhino conservation is a multi-generational commitment. For the better part of a century, we have been forging a future this remarkable species. (This first photo is of our late founder, Daphne Sheldrick, with one of the many orphaned rhinos she raised starting in the 1960s.) At the dawn of the 20th century, well over a million rhinos roamed Africa. Poaching had always been a lurking threat, but it became a full-blown epidemic beginning in the 1970s and 1980s, as the demand for rhino horn soared. By the turn of the century, poachers had killed 98 percent of Africa’s black rhino population. However, dedicated conservation efforts are making a real difference. While grave threats remain, Kenya just experienced two good years with virtually no rhino poaching. We are proud to play a role in saving rhinos, building upon the work Daphne began all those decades ago. Through our field work, we are protecting rhinos and the habitats they call home. Our Orphans’ Project has successfully raised 17 critically endangered black rhinos. Earlier this year, our extended rhino family celebrated a real triumph, when Solio became a mother the second time over. We rescued Solio in 2010, after her mother was killed by poachers. She spent several years growing up at the Nursery, before gradually joining the wild rhino population of Nairobi National Park. Given the complexities of reintegrating rhinos, who are a fiercely territorial species, we were overjoyed when Solio became a first-time mother in 2019. Then, barely a few weeks into 2022, we learned that she had become a mother yet again! (The second photo shows Solio and Savannah.) By bringing two calves into the world, Solio has made a momentous contribution to rhinos. Sultan and Savannah will go on to bear their own offspring, who will go on to have their own, and so on — and to think, it all began with Solio. We are proud to be part of this remarkable rhino’s story, saving one life and helping to forge a future for the entire species.
