September 22, 2022 – Rise and shine! As the Northern hemisphere says farewell to summer, the Southern hemisphere greets spring with a very special sunrise. Dawn at the South Pole lasts several weeks as the sun slowly inches ever closer to the horizon, culminating in the one and only sunrise of the year at the very bottom of the world on the first day of austral spring. The time lapse video you see here, taken by Aman Chokshi, captures this once-yearly phenomenon. The still image you see shows the sunrise behind the National Science Foundation's Atmospheric Research Observatory housing NOAA's Baseline Observatory at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica.
