In honor of this year’s Julia Child Award recipient, Grace Young, the Foundation is proud to award a $10,000 grant to New York City’s Welcome to Chinatown, along with four other non-profit organizations working to support Chinatown and AAPI communities across the country. Welcome to Chinatown formed at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic to serve its community and has raised more than $1,000,000 for Chinatown. They are using the grant from the Foundation to work with two local restaurants, Hop Lee and Mee Sum, to distribute more than 300 hot meals to seniors in the community. Hop Lee is a classic Cantonese-style restaurant in Chinatown’s historic district that has had to modify its weekday hours due to fewer office workers in the area. Mee Sum is a neighborhood staple known from its old school diner appearance. They work to keep their prices low to be affordable to their long-term patrons, many of which are seniors.
