When I shot Tahar we spoke about representation and how that influenced which roles he would take. What he said was enlightening. At first he naturally was casted for North African and Middle Eastern characters, but now he is more interested in European roles, changing the characters name to an Arabic one. Initially a director may have felt that it would change the background of the character and that would have to be discussed in the film but Tahar’s response would be that a character with a European name wouldn’t need background exploration/explanation in the film and so neither should one with an Arabic name.
