@haikwithus – Transactional Aesthetics: From Production to Consumption and Back
Ida Falck Øien set established discourse on periphery versus center in motion and followed that ‘there is no center – it is everywhere and anywhere’, pointing to new frontiers in fashion production. From the perspective of a fashion maker, she suggested we turn ideas into physical hands-on experiences and practices. She (de)centered on co-production in fashion, with reference to her recent Artistic Research PhD ‘Transactional Aesthetics’ (the Oslo National Academy of the Arts 2022). While we are accustomed to coproduction of immaterial values, exemplified by social media content creation, in her experimental participatory design practice, Falck Øien pushes this into material goods production. In her talk, she entangled the spheres of production and consumption, normally separated and distinct. The transactional sphere separates, yet binds together the two. By applying transactional aesthetics as an entrance point, she invited us into a state of individual confusion in the hope of reaching a shared understanding. Falck Øien used ‘the transactional’ as a motive, space, and occasion for exploring decentralization as a form of recentralization.
