In this third and final installment of posts commemorating Juneteenth, we are happy to share a curation of Jean-Michel’s artwork that honors the rich heritage and contributions of African Americans while also challenging societal norms around race, inequality, and cultural legacy. Through his vibrant canvases, Basquiat amplifies the voices of the marginalized and solidifies his place as a transformative figure in contemporary art. "Grillo" (1984) Named after the Italian word for cricket, this painting features symbols and figures that evoke African and Afro-Caribbean cultural motifs.
"Profit I" (1982) Addressing the economic exploitation tied to slavery, this work critiques the profit-driven motives behind the enslavement of African people.
"Dark Milk" (1986) Through abstract imagery, this painting reflects on the harsh realities of slavery and the enduring scars it left on African American identity and culture.
"History of the Black People" (1983) A profound exploration of African American history, this painting contrasts the pain of slavery with the strength and triumph of Black resilience and resistance. © Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Licensed by Artestar, New York #Basquiat #JeanMichelBasquiat #Juneteenth @Lisane Basquiat @Jean-Michel Basquiat Emporium @Black TikTok
