Exhibition recap part 1: “In the Black Fantastic” — Hayward Gallery at Southbank Centre. Curated by writer, journalist, broadcaster and curator @ekoweshun, the exhibition focuses on science fiction, myth, and Afrofuturism and features 11 artists from the African diaspora. The entire exhibition was brilliant but the video piece “Build or Destroy” by @rashaadnewsome definitely stole the show with — so creative and beautiful, wow!!! It “brings to life a bejewelled performer who vogues while fire consumes a fictional cityscape. Newsome describes this act of destruction as ‘a state of mind’ where artificial hierarchies and established structures are obliterated, creating space to build alternative, new realities.” “In the Black Fantastic” features works by Nick Cave, Sedrick Chisom, Ellen Gallagher, Hew Locke, Wangechi Mutu, Rashaad Newsome, Chris Ofili, Tabita Rezaire, Cauleen Smith, Lina Iris Viktor, and Kara Walker.
