We are proud to be supporting the human-elephant conflict (HEC) mitigation efforts of @cslzambia. This first HEC grant to CSL is funding the trial of different elephant deterrents including the smelly elephant repellent, to protect farms and promote human-elephant coexistence. #Repost - @cslzambia by @get_regrammer Sunflowers are not an elephant-conflict-free crop, however, our community team distributed sunflower seeds earlier this year because cooking oil is an ingredient in a new mitigation technique we have been trialing called ’Smelly Fence’. We are keen to trial mitigations like this that are sustainable, using materials and supplies readily available locally at a low cost. Farmers can grow sunflowers within the fence and harvest the seeds to process the oil. Developed by WildAid in Uganda, we were helped with the implementation by STEP (Southern Tanzania Elephant Project - STEP). The smelly fence deters elephants from crop-raiding in farming blocks, a foul-smelling liquid is hung in bottles (which have holes in to release the stink) along a line. We are still analyzing the results comparing the cost, effectiveness, and community buy-in, however the word on the ground is that it has been very effective in reducing crop damage in Kakumbi Chiefdom. We are grateful to @elephantcrisisfund for funding this work. #alwaysoncall #savetheelephants #elephantconservation #smellyfencemitigation #Humanwildlifeconflict #sustainablecoexistence #southluangwa #communityconservation #CSLcommunity #elephantlove #elephantlovers #protectwhatyoulove #elephantcrisisfund #sunflowers #mitigationtria
