There is a nickname for the community of Black women surfers: βsea-sterhood.β The term was coined by @chel.bythe.sea, @DanielleBlackLyons, and @duranmc, the co-founders of Textured Waves (@texturedwaves), a surf collective created in 2019 to band together women of color in the sport. ππΎββοΈ π
Whether itβs through nonprofit work, training programs, or content creation, the goal of these athletes and professionals is the same: to increase representation of Black women in the surfing industry.
βThe surf industry is largely misrepresentative of the global community that enjoys surfing,β says Woody. βHere on the mainland United States due to segregation, redlining and coastal access, we see that institutionalized racism has drastically affected who surfs and enjoys the ocean today.β
