My mom has become the first chairwoman in the 49 year history of the Los Angeles Korean Festival. As long as I can remember, she has stood next to men in her workplace carving out just enough space for herself there to do the work and exceed her peers. I have watched her lead a room full of men in suits with learned humility and softness as not to overstep on the patriarchal culture, at times declaring apologies for taking space although I knew she wasn’t sorry. Her example has made my life possible. She is the reason I have a passion for mentoring girls and encouraging every woman to take up space with no need to apologize.
