'Visions of Ancient Egypt' is a major new exhibition at The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (SCVA) in Norwich, which explores the enduring appeal of ancient Egypt in art and design from the ancient past to the present day.
Theo Weiss, an assistant curator at the University of East Anglia’s museum says: “We are pulling apart what we think we know about Egypt, and trying to understand how that idea came about in the first place. A mirage is a good way to describe what we are trying to grapple with in this show.”
The exhibition includes painting, sculpture, writing, fashion and architecture, alongside photography, film and installation art. It features work from artists as wide ranging as Joshua Reynolds, Hector Horeau, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, David Hockney, Chris Ofili and Awol Erizku (pictured here) alongside works by modern and contemporary Egyptian artists, rarely exhibited in Britain. The second image is a fragment of a sunk relief: 'heads of female attendants' (around 1370 BC).
