For both men and women shaving can be something that can lead to skin irritation, razor burn, folliculitis and ingrown hairs. To help minimize potential issues when shaving here are some dermatologist approved tips:
🔹Use a new razor or fresh blades. If possible try to replace your blades every 7-10 shaves
🔹Wash face with warm water or shave right after shower as hair is softer
🔹Use a shave cream or gel
🔹Apply moisturizer (or gentle post shave balm) after
🔹Avoid applying products such as hydroxy acids or retinoids to freshly shaved skin, especially if sensitive / prone to irritation
A couple additional tips:
🔹Despite the marketing for more and more blades, multi-blade razors may increase your risk of irritation
🔹Shave in the direction of hair growth with light pressure
🔹Store your razor in a dry area. Between shaves, make sure your razor dries completely to prevent bacteria from growing on it. Do not leave your razor in the shower or on a wet sink
🔹If still experiencing irritation an electric razor may help
