UPDATE: her name is Alfie & she’ll be hanging with us in hospice care for as long as she’s up to snuggles, a cozy warm bed, endless @tikipets velvet mousse & love. We’ll share her backstory & all the amazing neighbors who came together for her later this week. We, meaning all of us, we’re the only safety net they have. Our neighbor a helen spotted this emaciated, senior sweetheart stumbling out of a bush at Echo Park Lake. She’s ear tipped, she’s filthy, broken teeth & weak but safe. Tomorrow she’s heading in for an exam & a blood panel. She starts putting the moment you touch her & Helen’s making sure she’s getting plenty of small meals. Our guess based on past senior cat rescues is she’s been out there without adequate food for a week or maybe 2. Abandonment is now one of the top things we have to juggle. I’m the past we’d respond to a handful of cats left behind each year, now it’s half a dozen each month. If they’re not fixed, we handle that, but where do they go, they’re not strays, most don’t have the survival skills to forage for food. We have wildlife, urban coyotes who prey on small pets, these kids need a safety net, a foster & a forever home. Carving out the time to post has become difficult, our team is too small & what time we have is spent responding to the endless calls for help, be it trapping & fixing cats so there aren’t more kittens, sick animals, people moving & leaving animals behind. We’ll post an update tomorrow & the bill if anyone wants to chip-in to help. Please people, don’t adopt unless you clearly understand what a forever home means.
