SOON THIS WILL BE OVER Sarabande Summer Group Show 2022 Artist Takeover with @shainacraft Shaina Craft is an American figurative oil painter and artist in residence here at Sarabande. Her practice is informed by an obsession with flesh, a critical view of the viewer/subject relationship, and an exploration of the grotesque/sublime. Shaina’s piece for Soon This Will Be Over, “Victory”, is an oil painting featuring three nudes wearing handmade masks and body pieces crafted from foam board and spray paint. This piece marks the beginning of a new series of work exploring the power of anonymity in today’s surveilled reality. The masks and body pieces act as a filter between the viewer and the subject which slows down the gaze and forces you to look closer for information. Shaina builds a fictional world in which women are not subjugated the way they have been throughout art history.
