In the Yup'ik culture, babies are named after relatives that have recently passed, so that the spirit of that person lives on. In my mothers case, she had dreamt of Qugyulek while she was pregnant with me-- I believe that I have always been Qugyulek since before my own story was written in the sand. However if you were to go to my village in Alaska, everyone calls me Wahoo, my namesake, which was Qugyulek's byname. I had a certain plan brewing for over a year. Expectations designed from depths of my own ego. So when I went to my adoption appointment at the local humane society, I would have never anticipated meeting another Wahoo. She wasn't at all a reflection of my own pre-conceived ideas; for instance I had been planning to get a male doggo, and thought I would be looking at a different breed.
