Human-elephant conflict (HEC) in villages surrounding Odzala-Kokoua National Park in Congo is a growing concern. After an initial ECF grant last year to initiate this work, continuing to identify the best methods of mitigating HEC in this forest elephant environment is the focus of our latest HEC funding to African Parks. How forest elephants react to beehive and chilli-fabric fencing and other deterrents will continue to be monitored, providing further important data. Farmers will learn crop protection methods, new deterrents will be tested, and in one community with significant conflict, an electric fence will be built. The results from this grant will provide a better understanding of which mitigation methods work best for forest elephants.
