As #HispanicHeritageMonth continues into October, let’s look at the work of Mexican painter, muralist, and caricaturist José Clemente Orozco 🎨
José Clemente Orozco was known for being a politically committed artist, often promoting the political causes of peasants and workers in his work. He specialized in murals and established the Mexican Mural Renaissance alongside Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and others. In contrast with Siqueiros and Rivera’s optimism about the Mexican Revolution, Orozco was less comfortable with the bloody toll the social movement was taking and his work reflected that. He was drawn to the theme of human suffering, and he went on to focus much of his work on the aftermath of the revolution and its effects on peasants, women, and society as a whole.
