ON BEING: We’re about a week into the new year, and perhaps some of our original zeal from January 1 to make and keep resolutions begins to fade, just a bit. We wake up a little later than we intended; we allow work stress to creep back into our lives; we skip a workout, etc. The essential question of the new year, “who do I want to be?” begins to shift into “I remember who I was (when I wasn’t so committed.)” Perhaps we feel a little dejected in that memory.
What if the better question is “who am I right now?” In the present tense, not past or future. As we practice committing to ourselves in extreme ways (“yoga every day! 10,000 steps every day! a book per week!”), we miss opportunities to know ourselves, nonjudgmentally. It’s good that we commit ourselves to change, and we should! AND ALSO: we practice seeing ourselves as we are, and find calm from that viewpoint. What would happen if you woke up each day and asked yourself, at some point in your busy morning: “Who do I want to be today? And better, who am I today? What am I feeling today? How does my body feel today? How does my mind feel today? How does my soul feel today?” And when “imperfect” answers to those questions arise (“I am tired, I am stressed, I still don’t fit into that dress, etc.”), allow yourself grace: “I am who I am today, and that is enough. I see myself and I honor her, wherever she is on her journey today.” What might that feel like?
