When a proof is this incredible, the story really has a lot to live up to - and thank goodness this did because it has a lot of hype already! Which I can now confirm is all totally deserved 👏
Tomorrow x 3 (sorry I’m too lazy for full title 🤣) explores a whole new kind of love story - one based on creativity and a business partnership rather than your typical romance. Sadie and Sam meet when they both spend time in hospital as children; her because her sister has cancer, he because he’s been in a terrible accident. They bond over their love of gaming and years later they will finally get the chance to create their own worlds and their own company, alongside Sam’s best friend Marx. But across decades, the two will go through so much loss, rejection, pain and betrayal - will their bond survive it all?
There’s so much to unpack with this story that I don’t even know where to start - there’s a lot of tragedy and it’s probably the closest thing to A Little Life I’ve read since, but I wouldn’t call it trauma porn in the same way. It just gave me the same vibes with the type of friendships/romances between our three main characters, where it’s not all easy and joyful. Sam also has this slightly defeated edge to him from the beginning, where he is constantly battling his disability in order to do the things he wants and he never seems to quite accept someone might want him for who he is.
I loved the contrast in Sadie and Sam’s backgrounds and how that drove their ambitions differently - Sam can seem quite ruthless at times but that’s because he didn’t have the same privileged upbringing as Sadie. I enjoyed the insights we got into his past so we could really understand him.
But whilst Sadie and Sam are the core and the real creative talent, I can’t do a review without mentioning Marx, who to me gave this story its heart. He’s the level head, the mediator, the one who tries to keep the two connected through difficult times. He’s also just one of the most charismatic characters ever and I just loved what he brought to the story.
