“You only progress from what you recover from.”
Have you ever been in that phase where you’re SO excited about being in the gym, training hard, and making progress that you “don’t like” rest days?
OR the phase where you’re scared that if you take rest days, you’re going to somehow magically pack on tons of bodyfat and stop making progress?
(The second one is not only false, but often quite the opposite).
OR are you even MORE confused with current day fitness where we talk more about being more active, step goals, and all that jazz?
“Should I lay on the couch all day? Hit steps? Do yoga? WTF DO I DO?!”
I’m here to help.
Firstly:
YOU. NEED. REST. DAYS. FROM. HEAVY. TRAINING.
Point blank period.
Rest days should NOT include:
✖️heavy resistance training,
✖️intense cardio,
✖️group fitness classes,
etc.
After almost 7 years in business @edfcoaching and over 7 years of working with athletes of all ages, I’ve found the BEST sweet spot for most people’s recovery, overall wellness, progress, and performance is 4-5 days of training per week with 2-3 rest days.
On rest days, I prefer to have clients focus on low-impact, FUN activity only, and taking that time to focus on stuff not related to training or fitness.
Rest days CAN include:
✔️walking your dog,
✔️do a nice relaxing mobility flow,
✔️some really easy yin yoga,
etc.
Emphasis on relaxing, parasympathetic activity.
I also DON’T suggest regularly being a complete couch potato because gentle movement is still good for our joints AND spirits.
Some of my favorite things to do on REST days:
🍯Walk Luna (this has to happen every day regardless 😂).
🍯Yin yoga or a mobility flow.
🍯Errands/house chores.
🍯Really taking that extra time to indulge in more sensual practices (this is also something I aim to do every single day, and you should too).
🍯Spend extra time reading and/or journaling.
🍯Take a long, hot Epsom salt bath.
🍯Spend extra time outside.
If you want the yang to yang, there’s gotta be a yin.
AKA: if you want to be able to “DO,” and make progress DOing so, you also need to just “BE.”
What’s your favorite way to rest and simply “be?”
