Theodore Robinson (1852-1896) - River Seine at Boissise-la-Bertrand, n.d. Oil on canvas. Courtesy of @markmurraygallery
.
One of the first American artists to adopt the #Impressionist style, Robinson is known today for his restrained, sober and reserved landscape paintings that employ linear structuring of dominant, parallel viewpoint diagonals that are complemented by thin, slanting brushstrokes. His delicate color range was somewhat limited to an emphasis on bluish violet tones and a range of emerald shades of green. Despite the panoramic nature of several of his paintings, the high horizon lines of his compositions compress their picture planes. This emphasis on the fundamental nature of paint upon a relatively flat surface was an innovative aesthetic approach that Robinson’s American contemporaries soon adopted. Although he created a uniquely lyrical style of American #Impressionism that was less exuberant than works by other artists such as Childe Hassam, his inspiration from Claude Monet is undeniably significant. Of all the American Impressionists, he shared the closest friendship with Monet, and he once described the French master as “the most aggressive, forceful painter. The one whose work is influencing this epoch the most.”
