It is still dark, and the sun is beginning to rise in the east over Waipahi point. Waking up from what seems like a whirlwind of the past few days, I can’t help but feel as if it was all a dream. Who won the @lobosporsiempre Big Wave Invitational? The conditions were by far the biggest and cleanest in recent history. A fisherman’s son and a marine biologist obtained first place results. The oldest competitor caught the best wave of the day. The women competed alongside the men. Competitors split the prize money and all were called up to be recognized. Thousands from around the world watched the live stream as many more locals attended in person to what has proven to be one of the greatest celebrations of big wave surfing ever. It was powerful to witness first hand and to be honest, it makes it feel as if I am the one who won the most. As the sky changes colors and the sun slowly shines light over my own homeland land here in Hawai‘i, the truth is revealed. Who really won the 2022 Lobos Por Siempre Big Wave Invitational? Clearly it was Punta de Lobos herself. One of the most beautiful places with even more beautiful people fighting to protect her. A most humble gratitude to the indigenous stewards of the land and the current protectors of Pichilemu.
