I think it’s inherently valuable to speak about the price behind and cost absorbed by the stylist to create editorial looks. Social media has largely beguiled clients/ models/ photographers without hair experience into believing that things which are quite costly and dependent on years of trial/experience/learning/ particular technique are easily achieved. For this, I wanted to talk frankly about what it actually costs just to create editorial looks to make sure that my colleagues are creating with great intention and not feeling left in the lurch of “CONTENT & EXPOSURE.” Make sure a few things if you’re creating work you’re passionate about 1) fully discuss disclosed details prior to the shoot. What does your model look like? What is their hair like? What is the expectation of finished looks. Get multiple photos prior to shoot day. 2) what will be done with the finished images? Are they being published? What outlets the publications being focused to? 3) when can you expect edits of photos and if desired- do you prefer to sign off on group efforts of your work prior to publication including edits? It’s NOT rude To thoroughly discuss things politely with your team! It’s investment in your craft and often times teams appreciate input. It varies case by case
