Did you know that food doesn’t break down properly in landfills?⁣ ⁣ It’s something I wish I knew wayyyy earlier on in my sustainability journey. Food waste did not register as something I should be concerned about for a while because I thought it would just biodegrade in the landfill. 🤷‍♀️⁣ ⁣ Turns out though, it actually lacks the proper light and oxygen in the landfill to decompose in the right way. Instead it ends up releasing methane, a greenhouse gas even more potent than CO2. 😒⁣ ⁣ Once I learned that, I realized how much of an impact I could make by reducing my food waste, especially since in the US, food waste is estimated to be between 30-40 percent of the food supply (Can you imagine how much lower that would be if we could get municipal composting systems up and running in every city!?)⁣ ⁣ So I found a composting service in my area and started taking greater care to make sure I was using up the food in my fridge and only buying what I needed.⁣ ⁣ Make sure to follow along for more tips on how you can reduce your food waste!⁣ ⁣ #foodwaste #foodwastetips #sustainabilitytiktok
