Here, Spring is embodied by the young Parisian model Jeanne Demarsy, who later became a well-known actress.
Originally, this work was intended to be part of a set of four paintings representing fashionable women as the four seasons. Sadly, Manet painted only Spring and Autumn before his death in 1883.
