Friday, 09. December 💜 Paarse vrijdag (Purple Friday) is annually organised because schools in the Netherlands are sadly too often not a safe place for LGBTQI+ youth. It is estimated that half of all students in secondary schools have difficulties in openly expressing their sexuality/gender. LGBTQI+ youth have less fun at school, skip school more often and too many of those who have come out have been bullied or had to deal with negative reactions related to their orientation. Suicide among LGBTQI+ youth is also a problem in the Netherlands. The number of those who have attempted suicide is almost five times higher than among heterosexual youth. Purple Friday is the @gsanetwerk solidarity day where the whole school can show their commitment to gender and sexual diversity by wearing purple.
