I get a lot of “I tried (insert here), but i didn’t get (whatever was promised).” We are not computers. We are human beans. A whole bean. Dismantling diet culture is not linear. It’s not - if I stop dieting then diet culture doesn’t exist. But there is this unspoken binary (the good/bad, the right/wrong), that creates a space devoid of psychological safety. We want people to explore other options, but we punish, judge, and shame others whose path is not reflective of our own. Any deviation from or critique of the 10 C̶o̶m̶m̶a̶n̶d̶m̶e̶n̶t̶s̶, I mean principles - I mean god fucking forbid 🙃 There are many circles that have overlapped to bring us here to this moment, to our current state. Yes, what and how we eat can contribute to our health. And so do “Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) the conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks” (Healthy People 2030, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.) Idk where I was going, and maybe I’ll expand on this thought more fully during the week. For now, I want to maybe encourage a moment of pause. Q: Am I cultivating an anti-diet or anti-dieter space?
