Friedrich Nietzsche's mustache scared women. He was a medical orderly during the Franco-Prussian War. He contracted syphilis from a brothel while he was in the military. He was a tenured professor at the age of 24. He was a composer. Richard Wagner and Hans Von Bulow said his compositions were among the worst they'd ever heard.
Nietzsche believed Kant was a moral fanatic, Plato was boring, and Mill was a blockhead. He believed God didn't exist, and people are driven only by the desire to obtain power. He hated Christianity and alcohol because considered them both to be coping mechanisms that dull pain. He took a lot of opium. He had trouble sleeping.
After seeing a horse being beaten in the streets of Turin, he had a breakdown. He threw his arms around the horse's neck and allegedly returned to his boarding house, danced naked, and considered shooting the Kaiser. He believed himself to be Jesus, Buddha, and Napoleon. His family threw him in a mental institution where he died eleven years later after many strokes.
His sister edited his unfinished work after his death and framed his writing to fit her antisemitic and German nationalistic views. He once wrote in a letter of his desire to see all anti-Semites shot. His Übermensch was the basis for the original Superman– a villain– and later, regular Superman's archnemesis Lex Luthor.
