from he/him to they/them 🏳️‍⚧️ Since 2016, I’ve explored my queerness at a pace that was comfortable for me. It started with dyeing my hair blonde, which then grew into me finally feeling comfortable enough to wear makeup and so forth. Each year, I pushed my queerness forward in a way that felt authentic to me at whatever stage I was in my life at the time. Although I was becoming more confident in who I was, I was always so confused about what gender identity was a good fit for me. Hearing comments like “boys don’t do that” and “only girls do this” not only bothered me, but confused me. I didn’t look at objects having any affiliation with a gender because they’re... objects lmao. I have never felt affirmed by the binary (male or female) because it limited how I wanted to express myself. Being nonbinary gives me the freedom to be an unicorn. I can express myself however I want without any stupid a*s gender norms being attached to it. There is so much power in wearing, doing, and buying things solely because they make you happy. There is no pressure to fit into a societal idea. The mental distress that I went through trying to please a society that wants me to dim my light so that they are more comfortable was insane. I was afraid to wear a skirt for YEARS because I grew up hearing that there are things for boys and there are things for girls. I am so happy that I don’t give a f*ck about any of that anymore.
