How do symbols have power over the development and support of stereotypes? Join us on Sunday, 9/18 at 2 p.m. for a talk with artist/activist Hank Willis Thomas and his mentor and former teacher, @UCLA professor and author Robin D. G. Kelley. Explore @hankwillisthomas’ art practice and his activism as co-founder of @ForFreedoms. Currently on view in This Is Not America’s Flag, Thomas' “15,580 (2017)” commemorates victims of gun violence, each star representing a life lost in the United States in 2017. The artist’s approach of altering the flag to change its meaning shows how precarious yet powerful a symbol can be. The unaltered flag’s stars can stand for the fifty states but remove its stripes and extend its stars—so many that they require an excess of fabric draped on the floor—and the flag is transformed, asking how it could possibly stand for liberty and justice with so many lives cut short. 🎫 Get tickets at the link in our bio. ___ Hank Willis Thomas, 15,580 (2017), 2018.
