There are many reasons why people seek to rebuild their lives in a different country. These journeys, which all start with the hope for a better future, can also be full of danger and fear. Some people risk falling prey to human trafficking and other forms of exploitation. Today is one year since 27 people lost their lives crossing the channel from France to the UK after their boat capsized. The government has made it virtually impossible for people seeking safety to get here by any other means. Instead of more fences, more border policing and more ‘deterrence’ measures, the government should provide safe routes for people to reach the UK.
