ICA is thrilled to congratulate Cauleen Smith (@cauleen_smith), one of two 2022 Heinz Award in the Arts recipients. Smith's exhibition, Give It or Leave It, was on view at ICA in 2018. The Heinz Award in the Arts seeks to recognize individual creators whose singular work advances a spirit of curiosity in the power of the human mind and, in some way, enlightens the human experience. Cauleen Smith's experimental films, installations and multimedia works push boundaries. Operating in multiple materials and arenas, Smith roots her work firmly within the discourse of mid-20th century experimental film, pushing boundaries and blending moving images with painting, textiles and more to create immersive experiences. Smith’s work explores the power of community and culture while offering a phenomenological experience for spectators and participants. Smith sums it up best: “Everything I make is just an offering. I think of my work as a contribution to the histories of the Black diasporas and our powers of invention, survival and generativity.” Congratulations, @cauleen_smith!
