Today, we join many other organizations around the world in celebrating #GivingTuesday. On this day, we’re feeling grateful for all of the Rubin’s current and, hopefully, future supporters. To show our gratitude, we’re taking time to reflect on depictions of generosity found in the art of our collection, such as this depiction of Tara.
Tara is one of the most famous deities in Tibetan Buddhism and she is often associated with compassion. In one of Tara’s origin stories, the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara is overwhelmed with compassion for the sufferings of beings and sheds two tears that become White Tara and Green Tara. This painting depicts both of these emanations of Tara. In the center of the work is White Tara, the deity who bestows longevity. Her right hand rests on her knee, displaying the gesture of infinite generosity. She is surrounded by 202 forms of Green Tara, known for granting protection, each with the right extended in this same gesture of generosity.
Feeling inspired by Tara’s generosity and compassion? Consider supporting the Rubin Museum today! Your gift of any size will help us continue our work online and at the museum. Visit the link in our bio to donate to our Annual Fund now.
