You have to estimate the travel of the rocket before opening the shutter and the exposure depends on the brightness of the atmosphere and the rocket booster trail! This shot was just after sunset, so there was still a lot of ambient light, which meant exposure would have to be limited to around a minute without using ND filters or blending multiple exposures.
