Norm MacDonald was born in Quebec City. Both of his parents worked at CFB Valcartier, a military base north of the city. He wrote for a season of Roseanne before leaving to join SNL.
He was the host of Weekend Update and told a lot of controversial jokes. He was given an ultimatum by NBC President Don Ohlmeyer to stop making jokes about Ohlmeyer's close friend OJ Simpson. Norm did not stop making jokes about OJ Simpson and was fired from the show in 1998. NBC refused to air commercials for Norm's film Dirty Work.
Norm starred in several television shows in the years after SNL. He signed a deal for a sketch show with Comedy Central in 2005. The opening sketch was a parody of Budd Dwyer's suicide. The pilot wasn't picked up. Norm was in all three of the Eddie Murphy Dr. Doolittle movies. He played Michael Richards in the Andy Kaufman biopic Man on the Moon. He won $500,000 for charity on Celebrity Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. He was fantastic on the roast of his friend Bob Saget. He was a frequent guest on Conan's Tonight Show, where he told great shaggy dog stories.
Norm dated Elle MacPherson. He had a gambling addiction. He told Marc Maron that he lost all of his money three times, and the most he ever lost at once was $400,000.
Norm was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2013. He kept his illness hidden from everyone. He died from acute leukemia on September 14th, 2021.
