Read more about their beautiful art below 🖤 Who are you? My name is Sabrina, but everyone calls me Sab. I am a non-binary Chinese American visual artist specializing in painting, drawing, and graphic eyeliner. My work is research based, pulling from traditional Chinese art methods and Chinese folklore. What does your art make you feel like? When I finish a piece, I feel like a god. After a few days, I feel embarrassed. However, I would say that the emotional aspect of the process is more important to me. Drawing and painting were originally tools I used to help me process and consolidate my feelings as a teenager. As an adult I realize that the process and active labor of working on something functions as a type of meditation, as I often repeat the same actions in a state of absolute focus. My emotions, whatever they were at the time, show through the work I’ve put in rather than being isolated at the beginning as a conceptual goal. After the work is done, it is through periods of reflection and self-analysis that I can even begin to figure out what I was feeling. Who or what are your inspirations? My work is deeply connected to my fascination with traditional Chinese art, folklore, religion and literature. Contemporary Chinese ink painters like Xu Longsen, Li Huayi, and Tai Xiangzhou inspire me greatly. I also have come to appreciate the visual aspects of industrial decay and wear. I often spend periods of time observing cracks in the concrete floors and asphalt roads, and many of my recent drawings have been attempts to mimic this type of decay. In terms of makeup, I am still heavily inspired by Asian interpretations of natural objects, folklore, and religion. Some of my favorite looks incorporate figures dragons, snakes, and phoenixes. Others incorporate broken down texts from Taoist talismans or recreations of incomplete talismans.
