In @wsjmag now. Anja Rubik, 38, is a Polish model, author and activist. When Russia first invaded Ukraine in late February, she was in Paris and went to volunteer in Poland at the border. On March 11, she said she traveled to Lviv, the largest city in western Ukraine, to help funnel private donations to people and hospitals in need. Rubik, an amateur photographer for the last five or six years, also began to document the city in wartime.
“There were moments when I first got there when the sirens went on for the first time, it was quite stressful,” she says. “By day three or four, you almost get used to it. The human is an insane animal. We get used to things so quickly.”
Rubik returned to Poland on Friday and says she plans to go back to Ukraine in the coming days. We talked to her about the city as it prepared for war and her experience photographing it. (Story by @laneflorsheim, photos by @anja_rubik) wsj.com
