@jeanpaulgaultier is coming under fire after releasing a video introducing the “The Gaultier Brooch”. The Gaultier pin is shown in random states: piercing an orange, piercing a flame, attaching documents - all to convey how practical and useful it is. The Gaultier safety pin is nothing new, but the campaign video is well.. nothing new either. Surreal artist @visanstefan has been creating art pieces for years now, using random quotidian objects such as safety pins, candles, and oranges (to name a few). The result is a series of combinations that blend the ephemeral aspects of nature with enduring, manufactured objects. While social media has given a platform for people to discover new artists and their work, it has also blurred the lines between inspiration and plagiarism. When a creator’s work is stolen and passed off as someone else’s, not only is it unethical but it also puts a big stain on the artist’s future and collaborations. What is supposed to be a “Stefan Visan aesthetic”, will be passed off as a “Jean Paul Gaultier idea” which makes of the original creator an “unoriginal” one - and that is the sad reality of the art and fashion industry today. Mistakes like these could easily be avoided if luxury houses and big players in the industry simply collaborated with original creators.
