Repost @wiredme In a world more connected than ever, and in an age when social media can spread information like wildfire, it is obvious why totalitarian regimes are becoming more aggressive in controlling information. But being obvious doesn’t make it right. In fact, according to the UN Human Rights Office, depriving populations of the internet in times of protests and heightened political tensions, is not only “a disaster for democracy”, but above all, a violation of Human Rights. In the wake of the killing of 22-year old Mahsa Amini, an internet blackout has been silencing the voices of the Iranian people, our cover exists to echo that. Maybe publishing this month’s blacked-out cover of WIRED Middle East is daring, but we believe there’s no other way to express the current situation.
