For perfumer @cecilezarokianparfumeur , that meant distilling the book’s themes of ‘confusion, passion and destruction’ into smoky ingredients (‘to create confusion’ in the top notes), vanilla and oud (for passion; ‘vanilla has a leathery, sometimes a little bit sweaty, passionate feel’, while oud is ‘a sensual wood’). So how does one signal destruction via fragrance? Opus XIII features ‘pyrogenic base notes of the oil extracted after burning ingredients’. And, voilà! Stendhal in a bottle."
