Royal Black for @corsage.derfilm A while ago I had the honour to create costumes for "Corsage", a film about the legendary Austrian empress Elisabeth, directed by @mariekreutzer I made all corsets for Elisabeth, played by the incredible @vickykrieps Now, that the film has premiered in Cannes and is touring around the world I can finally tell you a bit more about the whole project. The corset in the pictures above is one of my most favourite pieces that I made. It is based on a historical pattern for a riding corset and drawings from a corset catalogue from 1878. There are a lot of scenes where Elisabeth is doing sports activities like riding or fencing. In order to do that she needed a corset that is high cut over the hips and has gussets that allow for more room of movement. The first item I finished for the film was a test version of this corset, that was used for training purposes. Once the fit and shape was approved I made this final version from hand dyed coutil and with subtle flossing stitches as embellishment. Costume designer @monika.buttinger asked me to create quite minimalistic "medical" looking pieces that would emphasize the functional aspect of the garments. It was a great learning experience for me, to work on a film for the first time and also to explore historical patterns and techniques for each piece. If you get the chance to see the film I can only recommend it. It offers a completely new perspective on the life and character of this legendary woman.
