The willful descent into nature is akin to the willingness to descend into the psyche, into depths of its nourishing darkness, and to be baptized by those dark waters. Men in today's culture have lost this descent; the initiation into the male spirit. We have no elders to offer it. So we feel disconnected from the essence of our masculinity, shackled by modernity’s domestication of our souls. We have to go back to the places where the victorious men who conquered themselves initially found this spirit. In the quietude of mountains, the haunting forests, next to maelstroms of impassable water, in pilgrimages to the remote and inaccessible. In these wild places there is no effort needed to quiet the mind, they're places of freedom. The vastness of untamed spaces brings us into contact with our own innate freedom, with some transcendent thing. Man enters these feral spaces of nature, and the heart of his being, not through giving in to his whims and desires, but through discipline and quiet. In touch with the living experience of his deep masculinity, he returns from his journeys into wilderness with the elixir of knowledge found only at the edges of life. Slaking the thirst of those that have lived in domestication far too long.
