The disproportionate rage -directed at women of African descent- the dismissal, the contempt, the punitive -in this case deranged- responses- is something I’ve had to contend with my whole life. In school, in interpersonal relationships, and in public spaces (and on top of it all happening, the denial by white family members / partners / friends that it is happening, is truly the path to madness) Even just now a “respectable” looking white English woman dashed hot chocolate all down me, and only very grudgingly muttered a half arsed apology after I very publicly challenged her, but you could feel the contempt oozing from her! I was thinking, imagine this situation was reversed and it was ME dashing hot chocolate all down HER + was then entirely blasé / hostile ?! I think the outcome would have been quite different! perhaps there would have been calls for me to be marched naked down the street and have excrement thrown at me?!? Like wtf !!! And the thing is it’s often not explicitly “racist” because no racial epithet has been used, but you know its fuelled both by a hatred of black people + a hatred of women, and you see it’s not something that’s happening to your white peers with anything approaching the same level of vitriol or frequency. The fact that not only was this written by #JeremyClarkson but that it passed editorial processes to get published in the national press, demonstrates how normalised these attitudes are in society !
