Shobac is an experimental seaside village built over the granite ruins of a historic settlement on the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada—it is the masterwork of famed Canadian architect Brian MacKay-Lyons, in partnership with Marylin MacKay-Lyons. Larry Gaudet’s novel SkyRoom tells Shobac’s story through the lens of magical realism: blending fact with historical fiction to present the lives of the area’s early inhabitants. Concrete’s design and formal decisions for Skyroom translate the themes of Gaudet’s text and pay homage to the architecture of MacKay. At the request of the author, the book had to function as both a novel and an architecture book. This necessitated a thoughtful, tactile approach to how the book is presented to readers.
