With present global climate policies, 2.7°C of warming above pre-industrial levels is projected. Even if every country achieved net zero — 1.8°C of warming is projected. The science speaks for itself; Net Zero is not enough. Green New Deal scale mobilization is the only answer. Policies like the Inflation Reduction Act barely scratch the surface of the scale needed to stop the climate crisis. We are in the midst of a sixth mass extinction yet we still struggle to understand the gravity of this situation. $370 billion in climate investments & $60 billion for environmental justice, is far short of the $2 trillion in climate investments and 52% emissions deductions Biden promised us in 2020. But now that this policy has passed, my work on the White Environmental Justice Advisory Council kicks in, by applying Justice40 guidelines to direct where all this money should be going to maximize impact for climate-vulnerable communities. Even with the IRA falling short of our ambitions, let's celebrate this win and the work largely done by climate and environmental justice groups that moved the needle: from indigenous-led resistance to fossil fuel infrastructure and pipelines that put issues of extraction on sovereign land on the table, to black women organizers in Flint who helped place a focus on environmental racism, and the Sunrise Movement who held a sit-in for the Green New Deal and been helping to elect Climate Champions ever since.
