Mirroring back what we’ve heard can help someone feel heard/seen when it goes well... it can also do the opposite if we reflect through our own lens.
When teaching this to new coaches, we suggest starting with reflecting their own words back to them. This helps the trust build because they can clearly here we are listening and hearing them.
Repeating back what we might have heard “between the lines” can be helpful to offer new perspective, but it has to be done carefully so we don’t accidentally install our own opinion or viewpoint. We could say, “I’m not sure if this is what you are saying... what I heard was... am I hearing you correctly?” But like my example in the video, if we bring something forward that wasn’t said, even with the words above, we risk bringing an unsupportive concept into focus.
I do believe strongly in trusting our intuition as coaches, facilitators, etc... and sharing that in appropriate ways. I also know that our wanting to help can sometimes have us looking for answers and solutions when we should be staying curious and exploring.
