Celebrating National Book Lovers Day with Emilie Sommer, a buyer/bookseller at @eastcitybookshop! Emilie is a fierce champion of books of all genres and we’re grateful to have her as an advocate for our authors. Discover more about Emilie and let us know if you have read any of the books she mentions!
Currently reading: Really Good, Actually by @MonicaHeisey (coming in January); listening to the audiobook of Good Company by @CynthiadSweeney.
If I wasn't a bookseller, I would be: In my past life, I was a lawyer, so I guess I'd still be doing that! Bookselling is a lot more fun, though (so please, people, shop local when you can so I don't have to return to the law!).
Favorite book as a child: My favorite picture book was Sylvester and the Magic Pebble by William Steig, which my husband thinks is the weirdest, darkest story for a small child. A lot of the book is Sylvester's mother and father grieving because Sylvester is missing, and honestly, that still tracks with my grown-up tastes. It has a happy ending though!
Favorite genre(s) to read and sell: Literary fiction (all the better if it makes me cry); memoirs (especially celebrity memoirs, which I devour); and psychological thrillers (the scarier the better, although nothing supernatural -- think serial killers, not ghosts).
Favorite reading spot: On the sofa in our den while my husband & kids are playing a board game in the next room. I also love a solo reading lunch at a nice restaurant.
Upcoming book release I'm most excited about: Okay, yes, it's a Dial book, but I’m not just pandering — it really is what I'm most excited about! SAM by @AllegraGoodman. I loved Sam, I loved her family, I can't WAIT to be able to sell it in January. Everyone needs this book!
Book I have hand-sold the most: Such a great question! It definitely varies by year and by season, and I always have a new favorite. For awhile I sold everyone a copy of Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo or The Office of Historical Corrections by @Daniedv. Right now, I often go straight to Great Circle by @Shipstead or Notes on Your Sudden Disappearance by Alison Espach. I love any chance to sell some Marilynne Robinson!
